Bush fire in Nelson / Tasman Region
Posted on February 8, 2019 by APTC in APTC New Zealand
While we have been enjoining an incredibly sunny summer, you will have heard the news about the fires in the Nelson Tasman region. This is devastating for those living close to the affected areas, but we would like to reassure you that the majority of our tourism businesses are operating as usual. If you have specific concerns, the best place to go for detailed updates is the Nelson Tasman Civil Defence website.

The Abel Tasman National Park is NOT impacted by the fire at all and all tourism businesses in the park are operating as usual. Golden Bay and Murchison are also unaffected by the fires.

The situation is changing but this is the current status:
– The fire is burning in valleys near Wakefield, a settlement 30kms south of Nelson City.
– It is mainly plantation pine forests which are burning
– Some other reserves in the region are closed to the general public, as a safety precaution and to prevent any further outbreaks.

How will this effect your clients?
– All main roads in the region are open
– Some flights to and from the region may be delayed – please check the status of domestic flights here
– Scenic flights and helicopter tours may be postponed.
– Some smoke is visible in the air above Nelson City, Mapua and Upper Moutere but all businesses are open as usual
– Some cycle tours may need to change their routes to avoid affected areas – please check with the business directly
– Most mountain bike trails are closed as a precaution to prevent any further outbreaks

Our thoughts are with families whose properties are being impacted by the fires. There is an incredible crew of people working around the clock to minimise further damage. We are confident that this situation will soon be behind us and we continue to welcome all visitors to the region.
