Flooding, heavy rain and gales as storm hits NZ

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: 

As the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Fehi reach the country, Nelson and the West Coast are bearing the brunt of the bad weather.

* Nelson: Nelson’s Rocks Rd is closed, and people have been evacuated from their homes.

* West Coast: Heavy rain and gales are hitting the South Island’s West Coast, cutting power to homes, closing schools and shutting down Greymouth’s CBD.

* Severe thunderstorm watches: Auckland, Northland, Great Barrier Island, Coromandel Peninsula, Waikato, Waitomo, Taumaranui, Taupo, Taranaki, and Taihape are on severe thunderstorm watch till 11pm, Thursday. Buller and Westland are on severe thunderstorm watch till 2pm, Thursday. Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, and Taupo are on severe thunderstorm watch till 7am, Friday.
